Decorated Lavender Basket

My mom and I found this funny old basket when we were cleaning out her basement. We were going to send it to the thrift shop because we didn’t know what we’d keep in it because of the unusual shape. But when she told me it belonged to her mother, I decided to keep it and find a way to use it in my cottage.

Of course I decided to paint it. I like painted baskets because they have so much character. I started with a coat of gray glaze, just slopping it on and not being careful.

I dry brushed on a creamy chalk paint, and over that an olive green. I added a layer of white glaze to tie it together. It was sealed with a clear wax.

Next I pulled out my trusty rusty stars, because just painting the basket wasn’t enough. I had to do something more to make it unique.

I sprayed some with a silvery pewter spray paint, and added satin ribbons to them.

I hot glued two layers of ivory crocheted lace around the top of the basket.

The ribbon from the stars was glued under the edge of the lace. Now it’s time to fill it. Lavender will be perfect.

We have a big hedge of lavender which is ready to be harvested right now. As you can see, the little orange butterflies love it!

Here’s my newly decorated basket filled with lavender. It looks great on my mantle, and it makes the whole room smell wonderful.

Just about anything can be upcycled into something new. Its fun to breathe new life into old possessions.

Now I’ve got a unique new piece of decor, and a lovely reminder of my grandmother.
