Installing the Kitchen Cabinets

I never realized there were so many shades of white. I’ve always been a color girl, and laughed when people said they have trouble choosing between six shades of white. But then I tried it, and it isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I knew I wanted the kitchen cabinets to be white-ish because I wanted them to blend in fairly well and not stand out since the kitchen and living area are in the same room. The upper walls are Netsuke by Sherwin Williams, a pale, creamy shade with a hint of green to it. Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t go to the paint store, so I ordered in some samples.

When I opened the lids they all looked the same. But once I got them on the wall in the room, there were (somewhat) dramatic differences. One looked grayish, one yellow, and one peachy. One was too stark a white, and one was a little bland. Feeling like Goldilocks, I zeroed in one the shade that was just right. Always Almond by Glidden has the tiniest hint of warm green, so it looks good with the walls, and still has a little bit of contrast with the sink and tiles. If everything was stark white it might look boring.

I picked a semigloss finish made for cabinet and high traffic areas so it would hold up well and be easy to clean. My wonderful Mom helped me paint all the cabinets and drawers. We saved the doors to decorate later.

Then I stood back as my brother-in-law Marc and my uncle Jean installed the cabinets and turned a blank wall into a kitchen!

I was surprised that the upper cabinets just hang to the wall in such a flimsy seeming way without anything holding them up. But my uncle worked in a cabinet hop for 40 years and he know what he’s doing!

Because my room isn’t square, and the kitchen takes up two walls, the corner was pretty interesting because it has a wider angle than usual. I’m sure the people at the custom cabinet shop enjoyed building that one (not!)

I love how the room is starting to come together.

Once we get the appliances in place it will look great.

Now I’m excited to finish the doors and see my completed cabinets. Stay tuned!
