Mermaid Easter Eggs
My cottage is pretty small, but I like decorating all of it for the changing seasons. So, when I wanted something Spring-like for the bathroom, I decided to make some Mermaid Easter Eggs.
I started with 2.5″ wooden eggs from Woodpeckers Crafts. You could probably use plastic eggs, but I like the weight and natural feel of wooden ones.
Next, I used some airdry clay and the Seashell Mould from Iron Orchid Designs to cover the eggs with shells, seahorses, and starfish.
I used Titebond Wood Glue to hold them in place. I rotated the eggs every couple of hours and left them to dry overnight.
I used a small paintbrush to paint the dried eggs with a layer of Smoked Oyster Stencil Creme from Royal Design Studios, being sure to get down into all the nooks and crannies.
I wanted the eggs to have a little bit of shimmer, so I mixed small amounts of Modern Masters Metallic Paint in Teal into my paints. I mixed these colors using Country Chic Paints, including Bliss, Tropical Cocktail, Whoop-de-do, Bling-Bling, and Starstruck. I didn’t use a recipe, I just mixed until I had shades I liked.
Eggs aren’t the easiest things to paint, so I only painted half at a time, so I didn’t get my hands covered in paint. After the top half dried, I came back and held it while I painted the bottom half.
Luckily, chalk paint dries quickly. I used a damp paper towel to wipe back a little of the paint while it was still wet, so that the undercoat would show.
I wanted a little more of the metallic, so I went back and gently rubbed a little more Smoked Oyster over the ridges with my finger to highlight the details.
After they dried, I sealed the eggs with Country Chic’s Clear Coat.
I love the way these turned out, and now I have a little springtime something to decorate my mermaid bathroom.
