Mossy Oak Door Star for Spring

Happy Spring Everyone!  I know it’s technically more than half over, but yesterday was the first day that really felt Spring-like.  We were working on siding the turret of my cottage, and I decided to make a little door décor to celebrate the season.

The recent winds brought down lots of mossy oak twigs (okay technically its a lichen, not a moss, but “mossy” sounds better than “licheny”), and I gathered some to make a wreath-like star to hang on my front door. Please forgive the shadowing photos, but this whole project was done outside under the oak trees.

The only things I used that I didn’t find on the ground were a couple of hot glue sticks, and about half a package of thick jute twine from the dollar store.  I started by making a double bow shape and gluing it together.  Then I unraveled a small piece of twine to cover the center of the bow, and added a couple of long trailing pieces.

I arranged five twigs together in a star shape, and one by one, I glued them together at the points and where the twigs overlapped.  I used small pieces of unraveled twine to dress up the points of the star a little.

I used acorns and their caps to cover any spots where the glue showed.  An extra piece of unraveled twine glued to the back of the bow made it adjustable (I tried it in a couple of spots before I found one I liked).

A turkey feather I found in the field was the final touch.  It seemed fitting because the wild turkeys around here roost in the oak trees at night. It is quite a sight to see them gather in the field, and one by one, they run at the trees and (very) awkwardly take flight. Once they get up in the branches and settled, they almost disappear from sight.

This project cost about 60¢ and took about fifteen minutes.  I love that it makes my door look seasonal and welcoming.  Not to mention that fact that it would look right at home in Hogsmeade Village in Harry Potter!

Best,
