Bedroom Canopy Details

After painting my bedroom ceiling black, I wanted to soften the way that the black met the peach walls. Because the ceiling is so high, I liked the idea of it being like a canopy or a circus big top, tethered at the corners and billowing up above.

I started by drawing a slight curve at each of the five corners (yes, my bedroom isn’t square and has five sides), and painting more black down about 8″. I painted decorative wood moulding in Modern Masters Warm Silver and hung it on each wall, stopping at the curves.

Then I used some decor moulds (several and I’m not sure of the names) and silicone caulking to create flexible castings. It took three to four days for the silicone to dry, and then I would pop them in the freezer overnight to make them easier to remove from the moulds. One set of moulds times five walls times four days meant this step went on for a while.

I painted all of the castings in Warm Silver and cut some in half and glued them together in a new arrangement to follow the curves I had painted on the walls. I also made caps for the ends of the moulding boards.

Next I had fun with a collection of chandelier crystals, rusty stars painted gold, star chain, and various jewelry findings. I wanted the corners of the canopy to look like they were weighed down with sparky, starry weights.

I glued the castings to the walls and held them in place with tape while they dried. Because they were so flexible, they worked in every corner despite them being different angles.

A small cup hook was screwed in beneath each corner decoration, and the chains were hung from them.

I would have liked less of the straight lines and more curves, but I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out. It gives the desired effect, and it makes the dark ceiling feel even more special.
