Cabinet Decorations
I had so much fun decorating my cabinet doors! I knew that I wanted them to be detailed but still understated, so I stuck with just the one paint color, Always Almond from Glidden, but I had fun with the IOD mould castings and paintable wallpaper with a Fleur de Lis design.
I used a sponge brush to spread a light coat of glue across the recessed surface of each door.
I pasted down the wallpaper and smoothed it down flat all over. A couple of doors ended up with small wrinkles, but nothing is perfect, and I’d rather have something imperfect and beautiful that I made myself than something boring and flawless. I guess that’s my philosophy for my whole house really.
Even though I doubled checked my work, I still screwed up on one door. I was careful to make sure each pair of doors had the paper running the right direction. But there was one door with a special hinge, and of course I didn’t notice and put the paper upside down on that one. So I scraped it off and started over.
Next I got out my favorite air dry clay (which I think has been discontinued) and my Fleur de Lis Mould from Iron Orchid Designs and starting making lots of castings.
I added an acorn and two oak leaves to each corner. The same glue works well on these castings. I glue them down while they are still wet so that they dry flat.
Two coats of paint and some beautiful Fleur de Lis handles, and my doors were ready to hang.
I found some gorgeous black cup pulls for the drawers. My Dad put them all on for me.
After the cabinet doors were installed, my kitchen really started to come together.
We made the countertops from pine boards and I stained them a dark brown, so they provide a nice contrast to the ivory cabinets.
The farmhouse sink looks great with these cabinets.
The details add just the right amount of fanciness.
I’m really pleased with the way these turned out. I had a very specific image in my mind of how I wanted them to look, and they turned out just as I’d imagined. I feel very lucky when that happens!
