Copper Pie Safe Door
When I had my cabinets built, they didn’t come with a door for the microwave cubby, and I wanted to keep it hidden. So my uncle (and master cabinet man) made one for me. He found a long hinge that would support the weight of the new door, which he cut to size. I didn’t want it to match the others exactly, but I started with a coat of the same paint, Always Almond from Glidden.
I had a beautiful copper pie safe panel that I wanted to use, and it fit the door pretty well, with room for a handle to match the other cabinets.
I used heavy hammered black clavos (fancy tacks for doors) to hold the copper panel in place. The number of holes on each side wasn’t such that I could put a tack in every other hole, or every third, or fourth or fifth, so I had to get creative about the pattern.
I’m pleased with the way it turned out. I think I like it more than if the pattern had been even. The fleur de lis handle matches my other cabinets.
I love the contrast of the black and the copper.
The light shines beautifully off the copper.
Just one more fun, unique detail that I’ve added to my cottage!
