Rose Embellished Mirror
Obviously I have been needing a mirror above my dressing table. A friend gave me a gorgeous antique one that had belonged to her mother. It was incredibly heavy, but I planned the whole corner of the room around it, even asking for extra studs when they framed the house. But even with the extra foresight, it proved too heavy to hang. 🙁
So I decided to do something similar to what I had done in the bathroom. I started with one of my bargain poster frames.
I stamped a border in (discontinued special edition) Faith paint from Country Chic. I didn’t have any masking tape at my house, but it turns out that you can use scotch tape to bevel your corners as well. I used a stamp from the Bohemian Florals set by Redesign by Prima.
Then I got out my Roses Mould from Iron Orchid Designs, and (new to me) Modeling Material from Redesign. This is my new favorite air dry clay. It is so soft and easy to work with, is simple to remove from the moulds, and doesn’t crack much when drying. It comes in dinky little 3.5 ounce containers. It took six to completely cover my frame. I glued the mouldings down with TiteBond Glue.
I used a couple of samples to mix up a bright peachy pink paint and gave the whole frame a heavy coat.
Next I used Vanilla Frosting from Country Chic and gave it a full coat, wiping back with a damp paper towel while the paint was still wet to let the peach show through.
I wanted more depth, so I used RustOleum Aged Glaze and wiped it back, letting it pool in the low spots.
That looked a bit dirty, so I followed it up with Limestone Glaze from Country Chic. It cut the antique look a bit and gave me the age and layers I was after. I few bits of Deco Art Metallic Lustre Wax in Rose Gold and a clear coat of MinWax Polycrylic finished up the frame.
I used four light coats of RustOleum Mirror Spray over the stamped border to create the mirror effect.
I hung the mirror length wise so that I can use it both when sitting at the dressing table and when standing in front of it. My collection of silver hand mirrors will be displayed around it. I t looks great with the roses on the dressing table. Coordinated, but not matching. Just the eclectic look I love!
