Turret Window Ledge

The window in my turret is rounded on top, so I knew I wanted to trim it differently than my other windows. Toward the beginning of the pandemic lockdown I was looking for projects and decided to make a fancy ledge to support the tile window sill my Dad had built.

I found a chunk of wood left over from trimming the outside of my utility room doors, and cut it to length.

Then I decorated it to within an inch of its life with air dry clay castings from decor moulds (I’m not sure which ones I used but they were probably a combination of Iron Orchid Design and ReDesign by Prima).

After they dried, I painted everything to match the walls, Bosc Pear by Sherwin-Williams.

I brushed on some Folk Art Home Decor Antiquing Wax and wiped back the extra with a cloth.

I applied a little DecoArt Metallic Lustre Gold Wax to bring out the details. The dark wax settles in the low spots, and the gold wax highlights the top edges, and the depth of the castings really shows.

I made sure to decorate the side edges too since they’ll be on display as well.

This ledge is a perfect fit to hold up the tiles, and it looks great with the other details in the turret. I’d like to do something similar around the inside edge of the window at some point. Stay tuned!
